The evaluation helps determine the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction and guides the development of an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan to ensure a safe return to activity.

What are the Conditions Commonly Evaluated During a Sports Injury Evaluation?

A sports injury evaluation can help diagnose a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Sprains and Strains: Sprains involve stretching or tearing of ligaments, while strains affect muscles or tendons. These injuries commonly result from sudden twisting, overuse, or improper movement during physical activity.
  • Ligament Tears (such as ACL Injuries): Ligament tears occur when the strong bands that connect bones are overstretched or torn. ACL injuries are common in sports involving jumping, pivoting, or sudden changes in direction.
  • Tendon Injuries and Tendinitis: Tendon injuries affect the tissues that connect muscles to bones, often due to overuse or repetitive stress. Tendinitis refers to inflammation or irritation of a tendon, causing pain and reduced movement.
  • Muscle Tears: Muscle tears occur when muscle fibers are partially or completely torn due to sudden force or overstretching. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and weakness.

  • Physical Examination: Assessment of pain, swelling, bruising, joint stability, range of motion, muscle strength, flexibility, and functional movement. 
  • Functional Testing: Evaluation of balance, coordination, gait, and sport-specific movements to identify limitations. 
  • Imaging Studies (if needed): X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans may be recommended to diagnose fractures, ligament tears, tendon injuries, cartilage damage, or other internal problems.
  • Diagnosis: Identifies the type and severity of the injury based on the examination and imaging results.
